Abstract

Parental educational enthusiasm becomes a negative symbol for children's education, causing stress to parents, and is blamed as the cause of low birth rates in a time of population decline. However, parents' enthusiasm for education corresponds to the generativity, which is the developmental task of adult parents suggested by Erikson, and can act as an investment for forming social relationships and family social capital. Additionally, parenting stress may be a tend-and-befriend response inducing help rather than escaping from raising children. The goal of this study is to examine the relationship between parents' enthusiasm for education and parenting stress and the mediating effect of family social capital in this relationship by using the Korean Children's Panel's dual-income household data from a new perspective on education enthusiasm and parenting stress. To utilize multilevel analysis as a research method, a parallel scale is constructed and the SUR model is applied. The main research results show that parents' enthusiasm for education significantly reduced parenting stress through the formation of family social capital. Parenting stress is higher in the family social capital type in which the relationship between parents and children is severed, but parents' passion for education lowers the possibility of this type of family social capital. The results of this study present empirical reality from a new perspective on the mythical blind faith in the relationship between Parental educational enthusiasm and parenting stress from a negative perspective.
