무언(無言)만화에 등장하는 몽타주 특성에 관한 연구

만화의 형식적인 속성을 떠올리면 ‘그림’과 ‘문자’가 함께 존재하는 인쇄물로 ‘연속된 이미지’와 ‘대사’, ‘의성어·의태어’ 등으로 상황과 이야기를 전달하는 것을 의미한다. 그에 반해 무언(無言)만화는 문자 없이 그림과 효과선 감정기호와 같은 이미지만으로 구성 되어지는 만화이다. 무언(無言)만화는 이미지들만을 이용하여 스토리를 전개 시켜 나가고 있는 점에서 비주얼 스토리텔링으로써 영화와 유사한 점을 많이 가지고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 무언(無言)만화 작품 중, 숀텐의 <도착>을 영화의 편집 기법 중 하나인 몽타주 이론에 대입하여 분석해 보았다. 영화의 스토리보드와 매우 흡사한 구조를 가지고 있는 무언만화 <도착>에서는 주로 연결몽타주와 서술몽타주가 등장함을 알 수 있었는데, 이는 컷의 자연스러운 연결뿐만 아니라 논리적 연결을 통한 유기적 통일성을 가지게 하는 역할을 한다. 이러한 무언만화의 연출적 특징은 장르적 특성을 넘어 주제를 표현하는데 있어 새로운 스타일을 선보이며 만화의 장르 발전에 도움이 될 것으로 사료된다.
Abstract
Cartoon means a certain printout with pictures and textures, so these continuable images, dialogues, onomatopoeia, and mimetic word would subscribe all the situations and its story. On the other hand, wordless comics is only composed of images which includes pictures, effect lines, and several emotion marks. This wordless comics only uses images and is quite similar to movie as a visual story in the way of developing stories. Therefore, this study is focused on the theory of Montage which is one of editing methods in movie and this method is applied to Shaun Tan‘s <arrival> in analyzing. Montage of linkage and narrative montage are mainly appeared in <arrival>, these both Montages not only continue single cuts smoothly, but also help to have organic unification in whole story through logical links. Thus, this interpretative characteristics of wordless comics overcomes the limit of existing genres and is expected to help to develop diverse genres of comics by showing new style.
