Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the syntactic distribution of BNP(Bare Noun Phrases) in French and to show their related semantic and referential effects. According to Bouchard(2003), the number is encoded in the head noun(N) in English, whereas it is in the determiner(D) in French. He assumes that this difference is correlated to the distribution of BNP in the two languages. In this paper, I propose that the number feature realized in DP is correlated to its referentiality, accepting Bouchard(2003)`s hypothesis partially. It is also argued that it could not be the number, but the referentiality of the determiner itself that is crucial for being an argument.
