Abstract
In accordance with the rapid technological evolution of smart digital livingroom experiences and trend of N-screen environment, users are under pressure of moving their mode of using TV systems from relaxing moment to use high complexity system. The current remote controllers are not supporting users in terms of performance, ease of use, natural focal shift and intuitiveness of contents consumption. The research aimed to clarify the cognitive deference between Lean-back mode tasks and Lean-forward mode tasks on Smart TV environment. Comparative experiment between system and tasks was conducted in San Jose to find the optimal control modality for lean back-forward hybrid environment with TV experiences. Three different typed remote controllers - Button type, Motion type, Touch Screen type - were selected and 8 users were recruited to complete the given 12 lean-back mode tasks and 10 lean-forward mode tasks on all three TV systems. The performance time, error rate, the frequency of focal shift were measured. According to participants, button type controller was good for traditional lean-back tasks while the Touchscreen was preferred on smart lean-forward tasks in terms of time and preference.
