화엄사 화엄석경의 판독과 조합 시론

화엄사의 화엄석경은 각황전의 벽을 장식하였던 '화엄경'을 돌에 새긴 석경이다. 임진왜란 때 화재로 인해 파괴되고, 6.25때 노천에 방치된 후 정리는 되었지만, 아직도 조각이 난 상태로 현존한다. 이 석경 편은 간간이 소개되기도 하였지만, 2000년 이후 화엄사의 노력으로 14,000여 석경 편이 탁본사진으로 기호를 가지고 보고되어 있다. 본고는 이 석경 편들을 판독하여 조합한 내용을 다음과 같이 정리한 것이다. 첫째, 화엄사의 화엄석경 편은 절반 이상 판독 가능한 석경 편들이다. 하지만 읽을 수 없을 정도로 파괴되거나 불에 탄 흔적이 있는 것, 표지가 될 만한 글자가 없는 편들은 판독에서 제외하였다. 따라서 1,500편 정도를 판독하였지만, '화엄경'과 대조하여 그 위치를 찾아낼 수 있었던 것은 1100편 정도였다. 둘째, 이 판독된 석경 편들은 모두 60화엄의 내용이었다. 석경 편을 대조한 텍스트는 고려대장경과 대정신수대장경의 '화엄경'이다. 이들을 60화엄 34품 순서에 따라 분류하였다. 분류된 내용은 34품 입법계품이 제일 많았고, 21품 금강당보살 십회향품, 30품 십지품, 33품 이세간품 등이 많이 남아 있다. 이는 60화엄 각 품의 분량과도 연관이 있겠지만, 불타는 과정에서 이 해당부분이 상대적으로 덜 파괴되었다고도 할 수 있겠다. 실제 편으로 깨지기는 하였지만, 글자의 자획이 매우 분명히 남아 있음이 확인되기 때문이다. 세째, 본고는 판독된 내용을 전체적으로 실을 수 없어, 첫 부분에 해당되는 60'화엄경' 제1~2권에 해당되는 「세간정안품」 1-1,2와 제3~4권의 「노사나불품」 2-1.2.3의 석경 편들을 조합하였다. 이 과정에서 화엄석경의 첫 부분에 해당되는 편을 찾을 수 있었고, 1행이 28자 내지 30자로 구성되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 글씨체는 거의 구양순체로 추정해 보았다. 이와 함께 석경 판에 새기는 글자는 선사비문과 같이 쉬운 작업이 아니어서 되도록 약자를 많이 사용한 것이 확인되었고, 신라에서 썼던 한자의 용례가 찾아지기도 하였다.
Abstract
Hwaen Sutra was carved on the broken pieces of stone Scripture. So it is called the Stone Hwaen Sutra. Originally, it was adorned with the walls of the Gakhwangjeon name of one building in Hwaeomsa. The stone scripture was destroyed by fire when the Hideyoshi's Invasion woke up in 1592, and that were left in open air during the Korean war, after that it has been found a piece by piece, but state is still broken till now. Portions of these fragments may be introduced occasionally, but research on the whole picture has not been made. Since 2,000 these pieces were researched by Hwaeomsa. As a result, total 14,000 pieces have been rubbing. The rubbings was arranged as photos, and each one was given a unique serial number. In this paper, I was set order of this matted pieces as follows. First, to read the letters was about 1,500 pieces. And it was about 1,100 pieces that I can determine the location of the original position in the Hwaen Sutra. Second, the deciphered contents were compared with 60 'Hwaen Sutra' included in the Korea Tripitaka and the Taisho Tripitaka. I can confirmed the fact that the contents of this stone Scripture were consistent with 60 'Hwaen Sutra'. Third, it was discovered that the fragment corresponds to the beginning of this stone scripture, and this stone scripture have been carved 28 or 30 letters in each line. Finally, I hope that this study has been helpful to restore of the broken stone Hwaen Sutra.
