초록

The numeral classifier construction in Korean consists of a numeral (Num), a noun (N), and a classifier (Cl) which is optional depending on the noun. When appearing with a classifier which forms a unit with a numeral, the construction has four variants, which differ with respect to the nature of Case held by a Num-Cl and the position of a Case marker within the construction. We first propose that the genitive type differs from the non-genitive type in that a Num-Cl modifies a nominal expression in the former, while a Num-Cl selects a nominal expression in the latter. We also claim that among the three non-genitive types, the Cl-Case type, where a case marker appears only after a classifier, differs from the other two types with respect to the nature of selection. A Num-Cl in the Cl-Case type selects an N, while a Num-Cl in the non-Cl-Case types selects a DP. We also claim that this difference leads to the structural and interpretational differences between the two types. Finally, we claim that the remaining two non-Cl-Case types share the same structure contrary to a widely held view such as Ko (2005, 2007).
