‘신방 엿보기’형 민담의 심층 — 신부 살해와 엿보기의 혼인담 —

본 논문의 목적은 ‘신방 엿보기’형 민담의 심층을 분석하고 거기에 내재되어 있는 성(性)과 결혼에 대한 기층민중의 인식을 탐색하는 데 있다. 연구방법으로는 민담의 핵심 모티프인 ‘신부 살해’ 서사와 ‘엿보기’ 모티프를 중심으로 국내외 민담과의 비교연구를 수행하였는데, 이를 통해 이 민담의 보편성과 특수성을 도출하고자 하였다. 본론 첫 장에서는 ‘신방 엿보기’형 민담의 전승 상황과 서사구조, 변이양상을 개관하여 민담의 전체상을 파악하였다. 성적 결합과 관련한 배우자 살해 모티프는 전 세계 민담에서 공통적으로 발견되는데, 여기에는 성의 폭력성, 그리고 성과 혼인을 둘러싼 불안과 공포의 심리가 내재되어 있다. 하지만 한국 민담의 경우, 성에 대한 원초적인 공포가 발현하는 때를 주로 첫날밤의 신방(新房)이라는 시공간으로 특정하며, 특히 ‘신방 엿보기’형 민담은 그 희생자를 여성으로 설정한다는 데 특수성이 인정된다. 여기에는 첫날밤의 성에 대한 공동체의 각별한 관심과 함께 폐쇄적인 성문화와 조혼 관습, 그리고 여성의 성을 피동적인 것으로 인식하는 전통적인 성 인식이 반영되어 있다. 한편, 대부분의 혼인담에서 ‘엿보기’는 금기로 설정되고, 이 금기가 깨질 때 혼인은 일시적이거나 영구적인 파국을 맞는다. 이에 비해 ‘신방 엿보기’형 민담은 엿보기가 위험한 혼인으로부터 신랑 신부를 보호하기 위한 방편이라고 설명한다. 이때 엿보기는 상대의 정체를 은밀하게 탐색하는 수단이 아니라, 혼례라는 의례의 장에서 집단적이고 공공연하게 일어난다. 이 민담은 신부 살해 서사를 통해 혼인의 위험성을 경고하면서도, 공동체의 힘으로 그 위험을 막아낼 수 있다는 낙관적 메시지도 함께 전하고 있는 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the depths of 'Peeping into the Bridal Room' type folk tale and explore the perceptions of sexuality and marriage inherent in the consciousness of the lower classes. In this paper, a comparative study of domestic and international folk tales was conducted, focusing on the core motifs of 'bride murder' narrative and 'peeping’. Through this. this paper aimed to derive the universality and specificity of these folk tales. In the first chapter of the main body, an overview of the transmission status, narrative structure, and variations of the folk tale was provided to grasp the overall characteristics of these folk tales. The motif of spousal homicide related to sexual coupling is commonly found across folk tales worldwide. This reveals the violence of sex, and anxiety and fear of sexuality and marriage. However, in Korean folk tales, the primal fear regarding sexuality is manifested within the bridal room on the wedding night. And the 'Peeping into the Bridal Room' type folk tale sets the victim as a female. This Korean folk tale reflects a closed sexual culture and early marriage customs along with the community's particular interest in the sexuality of the wedding night. In addition, this reflects gender perceptions of traditional Korean society that view women's sexuality as passive. In most marrige folk tales, ‘peeping’ is typically designated as taboo, and when this taboo is broken, marriage often faces temporary or permanent ruin. In contrast, the 'Peeping into the Bridal Room' type folk tale describes ‘peeping’ as a means to protect the groom and bride from a marriage fraught with danger. At this point, 'peeping' is not a secret means of exploring the identity of the other person, but is performed collectively and openly within the conscious space of marriage. This folk tale warns of the dangers of marriage through the narrative of a bride murder, but it also conveys an optimistic message that with the strength of the community, marriage can be protected from such risks.
