Abstract

Background: Jogakbo is a traditional Korean patchwork wrapping cloth made by women during the Joseon Dynasty, known for its geometric shapes and vivid colors that form a distinctive visual language. Recently, Jogakbo has gained attention in various fields such as visual design, fashion, and textiles, highlighting Korean cultural identity. However, previous studies primarily focused on historical meanings, fabrication techniques, or commercial design applications, with limited analysis of users' emotional and cognitive responses. This study aims to propose a new morphological classification for Jogakbo patterns, create digital pattern images accordingly, and conduct user evaluations to explore their potential in contemporary design and commercialization. Methods: First, a literature review was conducted to identify existing classifications of Jogakbo patterns, after which a new morphological classification was proposed by the researcher. Second, six representative digital pattern images were created based on this classification. Third, these images were evaluated by users, employing descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and post-hoc tests. Evaluation criteria included attractiveness, harmony, creativity, culturality, modernity, and overall preference, enabling analysis of contemporary user preferences and influencing factors. Results: All hypotheses (H1, H2-1~5, H3) were supported. Each pattern exhibited distinct strengths in specific evaluation criteria. Pattern A excelled in expressing traditional Korean aesthetics, while Patterns B and D received high evaluations for creativity and modernity. Patterns D and E showed superior visual attractiveness, whereas Pattern F received low scores across all criteria, suggesting the need for improvement. These findings indicate the importance of strategically utilizing each pattern’s characteristics in Jogakbo-based design development. Conclusion: Through user evaluations of six digital Jogakbo patterns classified by a new morphological criterion, this study identified specific strengths and weaknesses of each pattern. The findings can significantly contribute to contemporary design strategies rooted in traditional aesthetics, particularly by considering individual pattern characteristics such as the traditionalism of Pattern A and the creativity and modernity of Pattern B. Although this research expanded Jogakbo studies by integrating user-centered emotional evaluations, it was limited to design majors in their 20s and 30s, suggesting the need for broader user demographics and practical product application studies in future research.
