Abstract
In Heian period, its capital, Kyoto experienced a transfiguration into a metropolis and in the process of such transformation, the perspective that the area outside the castle was the unpurified one came to be settled with the inflow of large population and the vigorous interchanges of personal as well as material resources. In the beginning of the 9th century, 'Kegare thinking' begun with the court ritual led to the superstitious thinking that women during her period or maternity were filthy. After the 10th century, it was to be more consolidated. So the idea that the inner castle area centered on the emperor was the sacred place while the outside of the castle was the polluted one with diseases, the untouchable and demons was firmly settled. As a countermeasure, rituals like Sikyou-Matsuri or Nanase-Purification were performed to protect those diseases and demons from invading into the capital area while Yin-Yang Philosophy came to be expanded in society. As a result women polluted with impure blood had to be banished from society as people like the untouchable, the handicapped and goblins were treated in like manner. Finally, a monster like 'Hashihime' came to be born. So we can conclude that Hashihime transformed into a witch-monster is to be interpreted as a scapegoat of a patriarchal ideology, an outcome of deepening discrimination against women in society since the Middle Ages.
