Abstract

Facing the knowledge-based Economy, many scholars and politicians worry about the sustainable growth, which has caused to pay attention to the ‘social capital’. This paper reviews tentative results on the social capital research and derives some academic and political implications. The results are as follows. The view that the social capital affects the economic growth and the innovation positively is indeed useful. Many other people suggest also that the same thing could have an enormously negative effect on whole societies, however. In sum, the social capital should be a ‘double-edged sword’. In spite of its limitations, the social capital can be a beneficial tool to accomplish the sustainable growth. I expect that the limitations should be overcome by interdisciplinary researches, because this concept is interdisciplinary in nature. I expect that this paper motivates Korean economists to pay attention to the social capital. From now on, economics needs to be more ‘social’.
