Abstract

This paper explores into Miyazawa Kenji’s thoughts on consciousness as a teacher and the school. Kenji’s fairy tales can be interpreted in different ways depending on one’s perspective. This diversity in interpretations includes allusions and satires as well. This study examines Kenji’s consciousness of this period by exploring into the connectedness among Otsuberu and Elephants, which he wrote working as a teacher, Cat Village Office and Tales of Tatami Child and by coalescing the allusions and satires of these stories into his teacher period. This study takes the background of Otsuberu and Elephants as reflecting the failure of the movement for the university status tied to the background of those days. The commonalities between the white elephant in Otsuberu and Elephants and the cat the wood-burning stove in Cat Village Office are taken to reflect what Kenji was as a teacher. The message that Kenji wants to convey through “The cattle-drover” in Otsuberu and Elephants and the last line of “I” in Otsuberu and Elephants, the Otsuberu mansion—the background of Otsuberu and Elephants—and the destruction of the village office in Cat Village Office as the finale of the story are analyzed as symbols for the retirement from teaching. What Kenji looks like after having escaped from the realities embodied as the school and what he does after the retirement is embodied in the image of the people in Otsuberu and Elephants and this image plays one of the important roles in placing emphasis on the future goals after the retirement from the school as a weak person. Regarding the appearance of the red-clothed child as a character suggestive of the tatami child of the folk religion in the northeastern region, I examine Santa Maria of Otsuberu and Elephants, the lion in Cat Village Office, the tatami kid in Tales of Tatami Child on the same footing. The frustration deriving from failing to overcome the realities is expressed through the supernatural beings such as Santa Maria, the lion and the tatami child. The existence of these supernatural beings can be interpreted as either a religion or a folk religion. I explore the connectedness between the realties that could not have been overcome in Otsuberu and Elephants and Cat Village Office with the red-clothed child, Santa Maria and the lion through the tatami child in Cat Village Office. Allusions and satires in Kenji’s fairy tales are subject to a variety of interpretations. As an interpretation among the various ones, this study examines Kenji’s mind and the phase of the times centering around the three fairy tales written at the time when he was teaching.
