교역품의 양적 분석을 통한 위만조선의 緩衝交易 연구

초록

본고는 위만조선이 수행한 교역의 특징을 완충교역이론으로 설명하고자 한 것이다. 이를 위해 완충교역의 이론적 토대를 마련하는 한편 로마-게르만족 간 교역이라는 유사 사례를 참고하고 위만조선의 교역품을 一瞥함으로써 완충교역이론을 보완하였다. 완충교역이란 중앙집권적 국가가 운영하는 중심지(core), 그에 인접한 준중심지(semi core), 중심지에서멀리 떨어진 주변지역(periphery)에 위치한 정치체 사이의 교역에서 준중심지가 중심지로부터 선진문물을받아들이면서, 이를 제한적으로 주변지역에 전달함으로써 주변지역과의 교역을 일부 통제하는 형태의 교역이다. 결과적으로 준중심지가 주변지역 정치체에게 선진문물을 받아들이는 통로가 되는 한편 신문물에의한 문화충격을 완화시켜주는 역할을 하게 된다. 동시에 준중심지는 신문물의 흐름을 일부 통제하면서주변 정치체에 대한 영향력을 행사한다. 위만조선은 화폐, 장검·단검·창·도끼·자귀 등의 철제품, 車馬具·漢鏡·그릇 등의 청동제품, 회색도기 등을 서한으로부터 수입하였다. 진국으로는 鐵斧·漢鏡 등 漢式 문물과, 세형동과·세문경 등과 같은 在地産 제품이 제한적으로 수입된 것으로 파악되었다. 그런데, 교역품의 수량을 보면 평양을 중심으로 하는 서북부에 다수 밀집되어 있는 반면 한반도 중부이남지역에는 한정된 수치를 보이고 있었다. 교역품목에서도 중부 이남에는 장검 등 무기류가 극히 드물었다. 이와 같이 위만조선 시기 한반도 서북부와 중부 이남지역에서 나타나는 수입품의 양적 차이, 그리고 수입된 물품의 종류에서 보이는 차별성을 어떻게 설명할 것인가? 대부분의 수입품들이 세형동검을 비롯한 다량의 재지산 제품과 함께 출토되는 현상이 두 지역 모두에서 나타나는데, 그 의미와 문화적 성격을 어떻게 규명할 것인가?이에 대하여 본고는 완충교역이론에 입각하여 위만조선이 준중심지로서 중심지인 한의 문물을 제한적으로 주변지역에 전달한 결과로 설명하였다. 위만조선으로 하여금 한과의 무역권을 독점하고 주변지역과의 교역을 통제하는 일종의 준중심지 역할을 할 수 있도록 했던 요인으로서는 첫째, 진말-한초의 국제정세, 둘째, 위만조선의 지정학적 위치, 셋째, 위만조선의 정체성 등을 꼽았다.

Abstract

This article proposes the theory of Buffer Zone Trade to explain archaeological data related to trade in Wiman-chosŏn, which was one of the early states in Korean history dating to 195-108 BC. I use the term Buffer Zone Trade to describe the unique role of Wiman-Chosŏn between Han and polities in the periphery. First, I present what Buffer Zone Trade is and its theoretical background. Second, I compare the trade between Rome and Free Germany with those of Han China and Wiman-Chosŏn. Third, I survey imported and exported items. According to the theory of Buffer Zone Trade, by being positioned between the fully developed Han in core zone and the relatively underdeveloped polities in a periphery, Wiman-Chosŏn as a semi core was the natural route through which Han’s advanced materials passed to peripheral Chin. Significantly, in this process, Wiman-Chosŏn softened the impact of Han’s advanced civilization on the periphery, therefore preventing the peripheral polities from losing their own indigenous cultures entirely or collapsing. On the other hand, Wiman-Chosŏn exercised its power over the neighboring polities, controlling the flow of advanced items to the periphery. Wiman-Chosŏn imported iron products, high-fired pottery, bronze mirrors, bronze vessels from Han, and limitedly exported Han’ products, and its own local goods to neighboring polities. The government in Wiman-Chosŏn controlled the trade with polities in the periphery. The archaeological data indicates that Wiman-Chosŏn traded directly with Han, and then provided neighboring polities like Chin(辰) with Han’s products, thereby regulating and at times restricting the flow of Han’s products into the periphery. This conclusion is supported by the relatively few Han-style artifacts within the periphery compared to in Wiman-Chosŏn.
