초록

How can we interpret the coins having been excavated in the Northwest of Korean peninsular and the Northeast of China? Wherefore are the foreign currencies being excavated in these regions of the Old-chosun Age? This study starts with these questions and approaches and interprets the meaning of these coins excavated at these regions in terms of the trade among Yen(燕), Qin(秦), Han(漢), Old-chosun(古朝鮮), and Jin dynasties(辰國). I have studied about the coins excavated around the territory of Old-chosun, and found a very interesting phenomenon that there were no coins in Jin Dynasty, but the inlands of China developed a very systematic monetary economy and parts of Old-chosun used coins from the foreign countries. I interpreted this phenomenon happened, for the Old-chosun acted as a Buffer Zone Trade. That is, geographically, Old-chosun was located between A territory of advanced culture and C territory of relatively underdeveloped culture, and apparently let the C territory both accept the advanced cultures and soften the shocks from new cultures to prevent the breakdown or collapse of the native society and culture. Thus, the materials of A culture are found in C territory, but the strength is weak for they came through the B territory. While, relatively, many cultural elements of A territory are found in B territory and even some parts of B culture change into A-like ones. We can see these results plainly in the density of trade goods spread through A, B, and C territories, and the coinage is a representative example. I called this kind of trade ‘Buffer Zone Trade.’ As many literatures say, there was an inflow of many people at the borders of Old-chosun and Wiman(衛滿) became a foreign subject of Han-Dynasty, and heaped up arms and goods to show off their social status, preventing many counties around from going and seeing a son of Heaven of Han Dynasty. In these political situations, it appears, the coins came into Old-chosun, and spread considerably into real life. That is, we can interpret the chinese coins being excavated in the Northeast of China and the Northwest of Korean peninsular of the Old-chosun Age as an outcome of Buffer Zone Trade Old-chosun performed in the relationship with Yen, Qin, Han, and Jin.
