Abstract
One of the hottest issues in Korea this year is the controversies surrounding the Gyohaksa Korean history schoolbook. Based largely on the historical view of a political faction called the New Right, this schoolbook became the subject of controversy due to its low quality as a textbook. Accordingly, Korea's textbook screening system was criticized for being misused as a method to guarantee political promotion under the excuse of liberal diversity. As a result, many scholars who realized the problems of the present textbook screening system are looking for a new system of schoolbook publication. For this reason, the U.S. process of adopting school textbooks which is supposed to give a large amount of autonomy to authors and publishers and grantee diversity and academic freedom, is attracting Korean scholars' attention. However, historicizing controversies surrounding American history schoolbooks over one hundred years helps us realize the problems in this apparently ideal system. When publishers whose main goal was to make a profit, were given a significant amount of autonomy, they did not have much interest in teaching 'truths' or making the best use of the knowledge of professionals and introducing new findings in academic circles. Rather, publishers often submitted to pressures from interest groups and revised their textbooks. Since the 1960s they have relied more on eclecticism to neutralize pressures from diverse interest groups and actually advocate the status quo. Understanding this American experience makes us realize this. That market and capital write history is as dangerous as the government and political factions do. Accordingly, we have to correct the present textbook screening system in Korea rather than try to abolish all public intervention in the making of textbooks.
