Abstract
This article aims to discover how Zhu Xi’s academic system was accepted and transformed in Daesoon Thought. In the base of Daesoon Thought, it has core essences of traditions spanning Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism. The academic system of Zhu Xi, who completed his own field of Neo-Confucianism that bears his namesake (朱子學), is also found in Daesoon Thought and can be examined in terms of the extent to which its doctrines are accepted and transformed in that new context. Zhu Xi’s annotations in Variorum Edition of the Analects of Confucius (論語集註) and Huangjijingshishu (皇極經世書) and famous sayings such as “天開於子 [Heaven opens at the period of the Rat (子)], 地闢於丑 [Earth opens at the period of the Ox (丑)], 人生於寅 [Humankind starts at the period of the Tiger (寅)]” are described from the aspect of cosmological birth and growth based on Shao Yong’s theory of Yuan-hui-yun-shi (元會運世論). In Daesoon Thought, Jeungsan changed the Chinese character ‘生 (birth)’ in the third phrase to ‘起 (rise)’ thereby transforming the previous description to indicate a status occurring at certain times of the day. Also, regarding the terms ‘虛靈(numinous emptiness)’, ‘知覺(wise-awareness)’, and ‘神明(bright divinity)’, which originally indicated the original nature of the mind such as its appearance and function, Jeungsan altered them to be terms within his Degree Number (度數) theory which indicated certain periods. Jeungsan’s Hyeonmu-gyeong (玄武經, The Scripture of the Black Tortoise) contains mirror image writings of the names of various talismans (符, sign) and three talismans of ‘虛靈符 (the talisman for the numinous emptiness)’, ‘智覺符 (the talisman for wise-awareness)’, and ‘神明符 (the talisman for bright divinity)’, each of which has the phrase “the Nine Curves of Wuyi Mountain (武夷九曲)” written inside them. Zhu Xi wrote a poem Wuyizhaoge (武夷櫂歌) with the subject of the Nine Curves of Wuyi Mountain. When the followers of Taegeuk-do (太極道) and Daesoon Jinrihoe tried to understand the phrase, the Nine Curves of Wuyi Mountain, they interpreted that Jeungsan used the phrase to show the Degree Number about how his teachings will develop, and arranged his Reordering Works based on the contents of that poem. Also, in Daesoon Thought, Zhu Xi’s ideas regarding Taiji (太極) and Wuji (無極) are understood as the law of cosmic works, and the word Daesoon is defined as conveying the same ideas of Taiji and Wuji. Furthermore, it is found that the words Taiji and Wuji are creatively used in the names of religious orders, such as Mugeuk-do and Taegeuk-do.
