China’s Asian Policies under Xi Jinping: Characteristics, Prospects, and its Implications for South Korea

China’s Asian policies are evolving with the introduction of new measures, such as the country’s enhancement of its foreign diplomacy with neighboring countries and its proposal of a new perspective on Asian security. With the U.S. pursuing its “Rebalance to Asia” policy, Asia is becoming not only a platform to influence competition between China and the U.S. but also an important testing ground for China to solidify its role and image as a global superpower beyond its economic and security influence in global society. As China’s policy regarding Asia develops, South Korea, which has the U.S. on one side and China on the other, faces a strategic dilemma. In light of this dilemma, the goal of this research is to review the primary characteristics of Beijing’s policies regarding Asia under the Xi Jinping Administration and present future prospects and strategic implications for South Korea.
