Abstract
The present study aimed to examine a moderated mediating model that posits the mediating effect of online and offline self-discrepancy on the relationship between social comparison orientation and psychological well-being and that the mediating process is further moderated by self-encouragement. We conducted a survey of 20- and 30-year-old office workers using Instagram through a specialized research company. An online survey was used to administer the Social Comparison Orientation, Psychological Well-Being, Online and Offline Self-Discrepancy, and Self-Encouragement measures to study participants. Process macro was used to analyze a total of 282 data points (M = 32.2 years old), which excluded 19 respondents who had no online or offline self-discrepancies. The results follow. First, the simple mediating effect of online and offline self-discrepancy on the relationships between social comparison orientation and psychological well-being was not statistically significant. However, the analysis revealed a statistically significant moderated mediation effect of self-engagement on the effect of social comparison orientation on psychological well-being through online and offline self-discrepancy. The indirect effect was significant only in the group with higher than mean levels of self-encouragement. This research adds to our understanding of the influence of social comparison orientation on psychological well-being in general and the moderating function of self-encouragement as a self-regulatory mechanism.
