초록

This article delves into the role and strategy of civil society in various stages of democratic development and social change. The bedrock of democracy is its citizens and the civil society they inhabit. However, civil society’s specific role as a democratic entity should be tailored to the democratization process and the societal characteristics that foster democracy. It is crucial to note that the civil society of a contemporary authoritarian state should not necessarily emulate the path of the Korean civil society’s democratization movement in the 1980s but rather draw lessons from its experiences. This study offers insights into the strategies and paths that civil society operating under an authoritarian regime can adopt to strive for democracy. It does so by examining the South Korean experience in the 1980s, a period of significant civil society growth, and the subsequent evolution and constraints faced by Korean civil society in the 21st-century information society.
