Abstract

This study examines the dual mediating effects of disagreement exposure and critical viewing on attitudinal polarization through YouTube news consumption. The results show that the effect of YouTube news consumption on attitudinal polarization is not statistically significant, but critical viewing moderates attitudinal polarization. We also found a positive moderation effect of YouTube news consumption on disagreement exposure, a positive moderation effect of disagreement exposure on critical viewing, and a negative moderation effect of critical viewing on attitude polarization. These results provide clues for mitigating attitude polarization among political YouTube audiences. Exposure to diverse opinions on YouTube alone does not mitigate attitudinal polarization, but the cognitive effort of critically viewing content after exposure to disagreement does. This suggests that future political literacy education should focus more on the cognitive effort of critically viewing content after exposure to different viewpoints, rather than just exposure to information from different perspectives. Based on these findings, theoretical and practical implications are proposed.
