Abstract
YouTube's influence is gradually expanding. In particular, YouTube creators who run political current affairs channels produce and distribute a lot of political information through their own contents. Unlike legacy media, YouTube provided expectations that it would contribute to the development of democracy by positively affecting citizens' political interest and political participation while enabling interactive communication such as sharing and participation. At the same time, however, it raised concerns that it would only allow users to access information that matches their views and activate communication with other users with similar political tendencies. This study verified that the political effect of YouTube may vary depending on how users use YouTube and the political sentiment experienced through YouTube. As a result of the analysis, it was found that users who actively select political information by directly entering YouTube search keywords are active in political participation in online spaces such as clicking like, writing comments, and sharing videos. In addition, it was found that users who experienced anger emotions after using YouTube political information showed active self-expression and political participation. This study is meaningful in that it subdivided the results of existing studies exploring the political participation effect of social media use and provided an elaboration model for the political effect of YouTube.
