An Analysis of Leveled Writing Activities in Middle School English 1 Textbooks and Workbooks and the Perceptions of Middle School Students on the Leveled Writing Activities

This study has a twofold purpose. First, it analyzes writing activities of middle school 1st grade English textbooks and activity books which were developed under the revised 7th national curriculum. Second, it investigates the perceptions of the middle school students on leveled English writing activities. The findings show that the most frequent writing activities for the textbooks are controlled writing, guided writing, and free writing, respectively. For the workbooks, the frequency order is controlled writing, free writing, and guided writing. For the higher-level-workbooks, the frequency of free writing was very high while that of free writing was almost zero for the lower level. Lastly, the middle school students' perceptions on and evaluations of leveled writing activities were explored. The respondents on different levels showed different perceptions and evaluations on the writing activities in the textbooks and workbooks, which will provide valuable information for English teachers in planning, designing, revising writing activities in leveled classes.
