초록
The Dutch diminutive suffix has a rich variety of allomorphs, whose distribution is predictable: -je, -tje, -kje, -pje, -etje. The different allomorphs of the diminutive suffix are derived from an underlying form -tje. The diminutive suffix is generally classified as a kind of derivational affixes which alter the meaning or grammatical category of the base. However, the Dutch diminutive suffix does not make such changes. The use of the Dutch diminutive suffix depends on the intention of speakers. Denominal diminutive nouns in Dutch are to illustrate the wide variety of meaning contributions associated with the diminutive suffix. Some of these diminutive nouns are themselves polysemous. The basic meanings of Dutch diminutives are those of "child" or "small". The meaning component "child" extends into notions such as "affection" and "sympathy". Sometimes the meanings are related to the notion "attitude" or "evaluation". These are strongly pragmatic in nature. In many cases the use of a diminutive suffix has a strong pragmatic function. Thus, diminutive morphology belongs to the pragmatic category. This paper focuses on the interface between morphology and pragmatics of the Dutch diminutive suffix and suggests a category of pragmatic affix.
