Abstract
This paper aims to how Nathaniel Hawthorne retold the Greek myths for the children of his own age in A Wonder-Book for Boys and Girls. His way of retelling the classical myths is to interpret the original Myths in a tone of some Gothic or Romantic and to expand the epistemology through imagination. He has Eustas Bright, a narrator and young college student who transcends the boundaries of time to enter the neutral territory where the actual and the imaginary may meet. He presents us with Perseus and Medusa, Midas with his golden touch, Pandora’s Box, the adventure of Hercules in quest of the golden apples, Philemon and Baucis, and Bellerophon and the Chimaera. Characters from Perseus to Bellerophon go through experiences that teach the importance of coordinating outer sight with inner sight controlled by the imagination. When such tuning is achieved, they could bring the growth for their own or human future. When a combination of the actual and the imaginary comes about, it would teach us how to see the world around us and have our epistemology extended.
