본 연구는 가스펠음악이 사회적 변화를 위한 도구로써, 어떻게 기능을 하는지 연구하면서 1960년대 가스펠음악과 흑인민권운동 사이의 상호작용을 분석한다. 특히, 마틴 루터 킹 주니어의 활동에서 가스펠음악이 공동체의정체성과 연대감을 강화한 사례를 다룬다. <We Shall Overcome>과 같은 노래가 저항의 상징으로 작용했음을강조하며, 음악이 개인과 공동체의 치유와 결속에 있어음악의 영향력을 논한다. 가스펠음악은 단순한 종교적표현을 넘어 정치적 메시지를 전달하는 중대한 역할을하면서 종교적 표현 그 이상으로 초월하였다.
Abstract
This study analyzes the interaction between the African American civil rights movement and gospel music in the 1960s, exploring how gospel music functioned as a tool for social change. It specifically addresses how gospel music reinforced community identity and solidarity in the activities of Martin Luther King Jr. The study emphasizes the role of songs like "We Shall Overcome" as symbols of resistance and discusses the impact of music on the healing of individuals and the cohesion of the community. Gospel music transcended mere religious expression, playing a crucial role in conveying political messages.
