태국 전통의료관광의 발전과 한국에의 시사점 - ‘타이식 의학’의 제도화와 관광화 전략

Abstract

This study analyzed the process of redefining Thai traditional medicine as representative of national intellectual property and actively using it as a tourism resource, specifically as part of a national strategy. Through this process, this study aims to propose implications for South Korea, which is currently faced with the task of globalization of traditional medicines and medical tourism. Thai traditional medicine have been used as a treatment for medical conditions in the royal family. Since the past few years, the private sector has experienced a decline with the emergence of modern medical sciences. However, not only does Thai traditional medicine represent the country’s unique cultural and national identity, but it also acquires economic value as a product by being linked to the tourism industry. The Thai government recently revamped the country’s traditional medical system and incorporated it into Thai󰠏style medicine. With this, it was able to gain authority and trust, consistent with the great tradition of the Thai royal family and Buddhism. In addition, as the Thai government began to use traditional medicine as a tourism resource, the cultural justification of “Thainess” was also conferred. Based on the case of Thailand, the following strategy has been suggested for Korean traditional medicines. First, there should be standardization of knowledge to secure reliability in traditional medicine so as to attempt implementing it sincerely. In addition, a full strategic deliberation is required for turning traditional medicine into medical tourism and popularizing it at the government level. Moreover, close collaboration must be achieved between related ministries such as the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Ministry of Health and Welfare for implementing policy measures. Cultural products developed in such a process must be combined with, more than anything else, the unique Korean culture and values. Eventually, these efforts will pave the way for globalizing Oriental medicines and securing competitiveness.
