Abstract

This paper deals with Russian icebreakers infrastructure project by 2035, in particular its necessities, current situation and evaluation. Sea ice extent has been consistently declined in the Arctic - the part of the world most rapidly warming. Russian decision-maker hope the Arctic shipping route which runs from Murmansk to the Bering Strait could become increasingly popular as it cuts sea transport times from Asia to Europe. The update and modernization of Russia’s aging icebreaker fleet is integral to the country’s goal to further expand shipping activity along the Northern Sea Route. This shipping traffic has grown ten-fold over the past decade came true to reach around 31.5 million tons in 2019. Recently, the Russian government adopted a ‘New Arctic Strategy 2035’, ‘NSR Infrastructure Project until 2035’, and a ‘2035 Shipbuilding Strategy’. The core of the 2035 strategy and project is the construction of at least 13 large icebreakers, nine of which are operated by nuclear icebreakers. Icebreakers are crucial to developing Arctic trade routes being opened up by global warming. Russia is expanding its nuclear fleet, especially, Lider’s nuclear icebrekers. Lider’s main task will be to ensure year-round transportation of goods via the Northern Sea Route, which runs from the Kara Sea to the Bering Strait. According to economists, this will be the most expensive project in Russian shipbuilding history, but it will also be economically justified and will benefit companies around the world. But this project will need to consider financial and environmental challenges. The project may be delayed or changed for the time being due to recent oil price drops and COVID-19. In conclusion, if the resolution of the COVID-19 epidemic at the global level and the international oil price gradually rises to $ 70-80 per barrel, Russia’s Arctic and logistics projects are expected to progress.
