이 논문은 통계를 활용한 양적 연구와 의미 내용 분석을 하는 질적 연구가 상호보완하는 시 코퍼스 연구 방법론을 모색하는 것을 목표로 한다. 백석의 시 코퍼스(말뭉치)를 활용하여 시어 ‘가난’의 공기어와 공기어 네트워크를 분석한다. 공기어(共起語)는 특정 단어의 앞 뒤에 근접하여 출현하는 정도가 유의미한 단어를 말하는데, 백석시의 시의식을 대표하는 시어 ‘가난’을 대상어로 하여 출현 정도를 나타낸 공기어들의 t-score를 제시하고 t-score 1.3 이상의 시어들로 시각화한 공기어 네트워크를 작성했다. 이를 바탕으로 분단 전후 백석의 시에 나타난 ‘가난’의 의미를 살펴보았다. 분단 전 ‘가난’은 ‘흰’, ‘눈’과 함께 쓰여 긍정적 의미를 가지고 있으며 ‘어머니’, ‘아버지’, ‘나’가 혼탁한 세상과 동떨어져 외롭고 쓸쓸하면서도 고결한 정신을 가지게 하는 조건이었다. 분단 후 ‘가난’은 궁핍과 결여, 고난의 의미로 활용되었고 사회주의와 사회주의 영웅에 의해 구원받는 대상의 상황을 나타내는 시어였다. 분단 전후로 판이하게 다른 백석 시의 양상은 공기어, 공기어 네트워크 분석으로 그 차이가 잘 드러난다. 이러한 통계적 방법은 연구자의 직관을 통계 수치로 확인하는 것에 머무르지 않고 질적 연구의 수준을 높이고 연구의 방향을 결정하게 한다. 그 방향에 따라 새로운 통계 분석이 행해지고 그 결과는 질적 분석으로 의미화되는 것이다.
Abstract
The goal of this paper is to explore a research methodology that combines quantitative research utilizing statistics and qualitative research analyzing semantic content, complementing each other in corpus research. Using Baek Seok's corpus, the paper analyzes the co-occurrence words (collocations) and their network related to the concept of “poverty.” Collocations refer to significant words that appear in proximity to a specific word. By focusing on the poetic expression of “poverty,” which represents Baek Seok's poetic consciousness, the paper visualizes the co-occurrence network of words based on their appearance frequency, represented by the t-score of each collocation and collocations with t-scores greater than 1.3. Based on this analysis, the paper examines the meaning of “poverty” in Baek Seok's poetry before and after the division of Korea. Prior to the division, “poverty” was associated with positive connotations, often used alongside “white” and “snow,” and was a condition that made individuals feel lonely and isolated from a murky world while maintaining a noble spirit. After the division, “poverty” took on meanings of destitution, deprivation, and suffering, representing the situation of individuals who were rescued by socialism and socialist heroes. The analysis of collocations and the co-occurrence network effectively demonstrate the distinct characteristics of Baek Seok's poetry before and after the division. Such statistical methods not only confirm the researcher's intuition statistically but also elevate the level of qualitative research, provide new directions for further research, and offer corresponding new statistical results.
