명리학 주요 개념들의 영어 표현에 대한 연구

본 연구의 목적은 첫째, 명리학 주요 개념들의 영문 표기에서 그것들의 의미를 담은 영어표기의 최적 대안을 찾는 것이다. 둘째, 해외 명리학 연구자들과의 학문적 소통이 이루어지도록 하는 것이다. 본 연구의 대상은 명리학의 기본적 용어들이다. 연구 방법은 서술적 방법에 의존하고 구체적으로는 특정 명리 관련 영어 용어를 정리하고 명리 용어의 원뜻을 정의한 후 최적의 영어 용어를 찾아내는 것이다. 연구 결과, 명리 용어의 영어 의역이 주된 것이지만 중국어 병음이 영어에 그대로 인입되거나, 중국어 병음과 영어 의역이 결합되거나, 중국어 병음만을 사용하는 사례도 명리 상담 시장에서 증가하고 있음이 확인되었다. 명리학의 한문 용어는 그 한문의 우리말 발음을 기준으로 영어로 음역하기보다는 한문의 중국어 병음을 기준으로 음역하는 것이 시장 상황과 국제적 추세를 고려하는 것인 동시에 장기적 관점에서도 바람직할 것이다. 본 연구는 향후 보다 전문적인 명리 용어의 영어 표현들을 체계화하기 위한 서설적 연구이다. 기존 연구 성과들을 흡수, 보완하여 대표적으로 활용될 수 있는 명리학 기초 용어들의 영어 표현 사례를 든다면, 기는 ‘Energy’ 혹은 ‘Qi’, 사주는 ‘Bazi’ 혹은 “Four Pillars of Destiny”, 사주의 원국은 “Natal Chart”, 생은 ‘Vitalize’, 극은 ‘Control’, 설은 ‘Exhaust’, 천간은 “Heavenly Stem”, 지지는 “Earthly Branch”, 지장간은 “Hidden Stems in Branch”, 대운은 “Big Luck Cycle”, 세운은 “Small Luck Cycle”, 대운에서 양남은 “Yang Male”, 음녀는 “Yin Female”, 순행은 “Forward Cycle”, 역행은 “Backward Cycle”, 명리학은 명리(命理)의 중국어 병음인 ‘Mingli’에 학문을 의미하는 ‘ology’를 결합한 ‘Mingliology’이다. 명리학 영어 표현에 대한 다양한 대안들 모색과 그 중 최적 표현의 제시는 학문적 인프라 구축과 국제적 교류에 공헌할 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is, firstly, to find English terms for concepts related to Mingliology without changing the original Mingliological meaning, secondly, to make Korean Mingliological researchers communicate with foreign ones by establishing consistency and unity in expressing main Mingliological concepts in English. The object of this study is the basic Mingliological terms. The scope of this study is from Mingliology to Big Luck Pillars. The method of research is to find English terms for the specific Mingliological concepts and define them. And then to compare the English terms and find English terms which fits best the original meaning of each concept. The English terms for basic Mingliological concepts are as follows, which can be used by absorbing the previous researches, correcting, and complementing them lacking the expression of the exact meaning. The best term for Ki(氣) would be ‘Energy’ or ‘Qi’. “Four Pillars of Destiny” is the best term for ‘Sa-joo(四柱)’. ‘Mingliology’ for ‘Myeong-li-hak(命理學)’, ‘Vitalize’ for ‘Saeng(生)’, ‘Control’ for ‘Geuk(剋)’, and ‘Exhaust’ for ‘Seol(洩)’. The English terms proposed in this study reflect what Mingliological concepts and terms imply exactly. English natives and non-English Mingliologists can understand them well and this study will contribute to building academic infrastructure of Korean Mingliology and its international academic exchange.
