Abstract

This thesis is structured in a way to verify the validity of one argument. The one argument is that starting from Xi Jinping's third term in power, the characteristics of Chinese elite political dynamics have changed from the ‘collective leadership system', another expression of oligarchy, to the ‘one-ruling system', another expression of tyranny. To this end, first, authoritarianism, dictatorship, and their subtypes, which are used somewhat confusingly in comparative authoritarianism, were reviewed and organized. As a result, among the existing political systems, it is appropriate to set authoritarianism as a concept encompassing non-democratic systems in fact, and its substance is summarized as the same as dictatorship. In addition, although there are several classification methods related to this subtype of authoritarianism or dictatorship, it was judged that the classification methods of Geddis, Pey, and Svolik were appropriate to be used as the criteria for the so-called ‘complex' verification in this paper. As a next step, this paper verified one by one how to characterize the changes in Chinese elite politics in 2022 according to these three classifications. First, according to the quadrisection method of Geddes, we looked at whether China changed from party dictatorship to individual dictatorship. As a result, it was unreasonable to judge the qualitative change from party dictatorship to individual dictatorship. Next, Pei's dichotomy, that is, the change from soft to rigid authoritarianism, was examined. As a result, apart from the incompleteness of the concept, it is clear that the trend and flow are becoming rigid, but there are still many parts that are not persuasive in setting the qualitative turning point. Finally, when looking at Svolik's dichotomy, it can be concluded that although sufficient conditions are met to judge the transition from competitive to established dictatorship, the necessary conditions are still lacking.
