Abstract

In 1928, Two novels were published at the same time in London: Virginia Woolf's Orland and Radcliff Hall's The Well of Loneliness. Lesbian themes were described in both of them: the former dealt with it humorously, the latter melancholically. Woolf's Orlando was successful in the publishing market, but Hall's The Well of Loneliness was banned and ridiculed. Literary critics devaluated both of them. As time has gone by, fortunes of them have been up and down. After the war of lesbian sexuality in 1920s in metropolitan London, two books were almost forgotten. However at the beginning of 21 century, all of sudden the literary value of them has been uprising. After un/doing gender performance of Judith Butler, multiple genders were produced: transgender, transsexual, queer, genderqueer, transvestism etcs. Various gender studies have been interested in them. They focus on them and are struggling to get the position of hegemonic interpretation. they are under the way of "turf war" and border war among multi-trans theories. In the new contexts conflicting readings struggle to get to power in the arena of interpretations. The purpose of this essay tries to grasp the productivities and meanings of Orlando's trans(sexual-gender-queer) experiment, When reading it by means of the broad concept of gender-migration, they come out productively.
