본 연구는 국내 가스도매시장을 대상으로 시장경쟁구도가 사회후생에 미치는 효과를 게임이론모형을 이용하여 분석한다. 독점시장, 과점시장, 하이브리드시장 등 세 가지 시장구도에 따른 사회후생을 분석한 결과, 시장구조별 사회후생은 투입요소 구매가격 및 시장참여자의 수 등 주요 변수의 상호관계에 따라 그 순위가 달라진다. 과점시장 또는 하이브리드시장의 사회후생은 지배기업이 독점기업으로서 구매협상력이 낮을수록, 독점기업의 비효율이 클수록, 경쟁기업의 수가 많을수록 독점시장의 사회후생보다 커진다. 과점시장의 사회후생은 하이브리드시장의 사회후생보다 더 크거나 같거나 작을 수 있지만, 과점시장에 참여하는 기업의 수가 일정 수준 이상이고 시장가격이 한계비용과 같거나 근접할수록 과점시장의 사회후생은 더 커진다.
Abstract
We compare the social welfare of three different wholesale market structures on Korea’s LNG industry using a game-theoretic model. The market structures considered in the study are monopoly, oligopoly, and hybrid market. In hybrid market, a monopolist competes for the domestic market against sellers who are international suppliers of LNG. In the oligopoly, a new supplier has an incentive to enter the domestic market when its purchasing price of LNG in the international market is below a certain level. The rank of social welfare among different market structures depends on various parameters such as a monopolist’s market power, X-inefficiency, international market prices of LNG, and the number of new entrants in the domestic market. The social welfare of oligopoly market is higher than that of a hybrid market when the number of sellers in the domestic wholesale market is higher than a certain level, compared to the number of international sellers and the market price of LNG is close to the marginal cost of international suppliers.
