초록
Currently, sustainable development is pressed on corporate management. This paper investigates the role of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises in achieving the sustainable development. Most academic studies about sustainable development deal with the behaviors of large enterprises. Four theoretical viewpoints are applied to explain why SMEs are limited in pursuing sustainable management and how the sustainable achievement of SMEs can improve. Institution theory and resource-based view explains the weakness of SMEs in sustainable management. The concepts of global value chain and creating shared value are suggested as the means to improve the SMEs’ capability to achieve sustainability. These four theoretical backgrounds help management scholars to understand SMEs’ sustainable behaviors and also provide useful implications to policy makers. The contribution of this paper is providing four possible theoretical backgrounds to SMEs’ sustainable management and based on each theories, more empirical or case based studies should be performed further.
