이 글은 『영조동궁일기』를 통해 경종대 왕세제의 궁중 일상생활의 정치적 성격을 규명하기 위해 작성된 것이다. 현전하는 조선후기 동궁일기 자료는 동궁의 궁중생활의 다양한 측면들을 주로 서연과 의례를 중심으로 보여주고 있다. 그런데, 서연과 의례는 단순히 동궁에게 부과된 의무였던 것만은 아니었고, 동궁의 개인적 성격과 정치적 입지에 따라서는 오히려 동궁이 자신의 권력을 행사하는 미시정치의 장치로도 기능하였다. 동궁을 보필하는 시강원이 단순히 동궁을 보도하는 데서 그치는 것이 아니라 동궁의 하령을 이행하는 정치적 역할을 담당하고 있었기 때문이다. 이런 관점에서 보자면, 이 글에서 분석 대상으로 삼는 영조가 훗날 즉위하여 과감하게 탕평정치를 추구한 사실을 고려할 때에 과연 그의 강력한 정치력이 동궁 시절에는 어떻게 발현되고 있었는지 동궁일기의 현장성을 토대로 이를 재구성하는 작업이야말로 조선시대 동궁의 일반적인 미시정치를 예증하는 적합한 방법이 될 수 있을 것이다. 이 글을 계기로 향후 조선시대 정치사에서 동궁일기의 사료적 가치를 십분 중시하여 그 현장성을 바탕으로 동궁의 궁중 미시정치가 적극적으로 연구될 수 있기를 바란다.
Abstract
This thesis is to study the political power of the Crown Prince during the reign of King Kyungjong. The Crown Prince, later named King Yungjo, led his everyday life in the palace since he was formally designated as the crown prince, and his officials kept official diaries for him everyday. Now these diaries are preserved as the name of "Yungjo-Donggoong-Ilgi(英祖東宮日記)" in Kyujanggak Archive. Most official diaries for the crown prince have the contents mainly composed of the royal lecture and royal ceremony. In most cases, such contents can be read as what's somewhat non-political with pure education and formal rituals. But, with close reading we can find out that even seemingly non-political contents have important political implications, for everyday life of the crown prince is the process and result of the micropolitics he and his royal family and his officials are involved in with one another. In this viewpoint, "Yungjo-Donggoong-Ilgi" is one of good examples to give new light on the historical character of the official diaries for the crown prince. Yungjo, who is famous for the firm decision-making for impartial Tangpyung(蕩平) politics, showed his such typical political character also as the crown prince. That's the point. Official diaries for the crown prince so far have caused little attraction to historians who specialized in the traditional political history with limited interest in the sources like formal chronicles and personal anthologies. Now it is time to treat these diaries earnestly for the purpose of doing political history, and think big.
