Abstract

This paper expands the ethical discourse on artificial intelligence (AI) beyond the conventional frameworks of normative regulation and technical control, by reframing it as a philosophical inquiry into the possibility of moral internalization. To this end, it analyzes Xunzi’s (荀子) theory of human nature as inherently evil (性惡 說) and his ritual propriety (禮) moral cultivation theory, exploring how these ideas may provide a theoretical foundation for embedding moral autonomy and accountability in AI design. Xunzi believed that although humans have an evil nature, they can grow into moral beings through transforming human nature through deliberate efforts (化性起僞) and the repeated practice of ritual propriety. This perspective can be similarly applied to artificial intelligence, which lacks inherent morality, and suggests that AI can be designed to acquire social responsibility capabilities through iterative learning and ethical judgment systems. This paper analyzes cases of ethical flaws in artificial intelligence that have arisen in various fields, including recruitment and the military, and argues that Xunzi’s theory of demarcation (分界論) and the theory of ritual propriety can provide philosophical direction for artificial intelligence design. The repeated practice and habituation of ritual propriety suggest a technological possibility for implementing moral internalization, implying that artificial intelligence can function not merely as a rule-executing agent, but as a moral subject. In conclusion, Xunzi’s thought can be reinterpreted as a practical philosophy and theoretical design principle for implementing ethical artificial intelligence, providing the philosophical foundation necessary for artificial intelligence to function based on the moral standards of human society.
