Abstract

This study explores Wang Yangming’s sense of crisis during his time, focusing on his theoretical and practical transformations and their implications for modern civic education. The contemporary crisis of democracy fundamentally revolves around issues of citizenship and community cohesion, prompting theoretical discussions on designing and implementing civic education to address these challenges. Wang Yangming’s philosophy offers valuable insights into such modern issues and serves as a critical pillar of East Asian Confucian traditions. Wang Yangming directly confronted the educational and political crises of the Ming society, criticizing the competitive examination system and the formalistic knowledge framework of Neo-Confucianism for distorting the original moral ideals of Confucianism. His intellectual transformation restructured Confucian moral principles based on internal awareness (Liangzhi) and everyday practice, emphasizing moral agency across all social classes. Wang notably rejected the rigid class distinctions within the traditional Shinonggongshang hierarchy, asserting that individuals could achieve moral perfection through their respective professional roles. This philosophical approach aligns with the foundational principles of democratic equality and participatory spirit that modern civic education seeks to promote. Moreover, Wang Yangming’s concept of Jiangxue (講學), or learning communities, can be considered a prototype for the modern public sphere, fostering free discourse and mutual learning to build communal values. In this way, Wang’s philosophy transcends the historical and cultural confines of East Asia, offering intellectual resources to address the educational and social crises of contemporary democratic societies. Finally, by comparing Wang Yangming’s thought with Neo-Confucianism, which has traditionally dominated East Asian civic discourse, this study highlights Wang’s distinctive modern implications, sharpening their relevance to contemporary discussions on civic education.
