Abstract

This study examines the aspects of meditative thought (瞑想) and self-cultivation (修養) embodied in the literature of Kubong Song Ik-pil (龜峯 宋翼弼, 1534–1599), with the aim of shedding new light on his literary world. Alongside Yulgok Yi I (栗谷李珥, 1536– 1584) and Ugye Seong Hon (牛溪 成渾, 1535–1598), Song Ik-pil was a central figure in establishing the academic foundation of the Giho school of Neo-Confucianism in mid-Joseon. He laid the groundwork for Neo-Confucian philosophy and ritual studies, while also deepening the scope of Confucian moral thought. As one of the Eight Literary Worthies (八文學士), he also achieved remarkable accomplishments as a scholar of literature. Song Ik-pil internalized self-cultivation through the practices of quiet-sitting (靜坐) and reverence (敬), refining these practices into poetic expression and elevating a meditative way of life into the realm of literary language. This paper systematically analyzes the meditative character of his writings from the perspective of Confucian theories of self-cultivation. Chapter 2 investigates his understanding of meditation and cultivation, focusing on the theory of straightforwardness (直) within the Neo-Confucian tradition of quiet-sitting. Chapter 3 explores the concrete aspects of quiet-sitting and daily mindfulness embodied in his poetry and prose. Chapter 4 considers how, amid hardship and exile, his meditative attitude of acceptance (受容) and restoration of the self was literarily manifested. Through this inquiry, the study demonstrates that Song Ik-pil’s literature was not merely the product of didactic Neo-Confucian instruction, but rather the outcome of profound inner reflection and disciplined practice. It seeks to interpret his works not as a reduction to moralistic teaching, but as literature in which meditative thought and the practice of self-cultivation are organically integrated. By closely examining the interplay between Neo-Confucian modes of inner cultivation and poetic representation, this study further considers how Song Ik-pil’s literature can be reinterpreted as a valuable resource for contemporary discourses on meditation and for the development of humanistic content today.
