Abstract
Recently, 3D (3-Dimentional) image data utilization technology has been attracting attention, and studies are being made to measurethe growth of crops using equipment such as laser scanners and depth cameras. If 3D image data is used to measure the growth characteristicsof crops, it has the advantage of using structure and shape information that cannot be measured in planar data. In this study, the growth characteristics of soybeans were estimated using 3D image data. Soybeans were measured at beginning bloom (R1), beginning pod (R3),and beginning seed (R5) by using a depth camera. The x, y coordinate position of the main stem was specified using the centroidof the object projected on the plane for estimating the plant height and showed a high determination coefficient. In the case of plantheight estimation, as the structure and shape of stems and leaves developed, the method using the distance between the top points ofan object from the ground in 3D image had a large error between the actual measurement and the estimated value. For estimating theleaf area, object surface points with 3D position values were divided according to height, and the area of each height section was calculated. The estimated value was overestimated because the calculated area in each height section increased due to the increased number ofpoints in the 3D data merging. For more precise growth investigation using 3D images in the future, it is thought that data pre-processingand analysis method development taking into account the characteristics of unique growth variables of crops are required.
