Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary betaine, glycine, choline supplementation on productive performance, egg quality, immune response, and serum measurements in aged laying hens raised under heat stress conditions. A total of 336 LohmannBrown-Lite laying hens aged 86 weeks were randomly allotted to one of six dietary treatments with seven replicates per treatment. A basal diet was formulated to meet or exceed the nutrient and energy requirements for laying hens. Additional five treatment dietswere prepared by supplementing 0.2% betaine alone, 0.2% betaine and 0.62% glycine, 0.2% betaine and 0.32% choline, 0.32% cholineand 0.62% glycine, or combination of those 3 supplements to the basal diet. All hens were raised under cyclic heat stress conditions, averaging 31.7±1.7℃ and 57% relative humidity (RH) for 8 hours and 27±1.3℃ and 57% RH for the remaining time during a day. The experiment lasted for 8 weeks. The results indicated no significant effects of dietary treatments on productive performance, eggquality, and immune response in aged laying hens. However, the diet supplemented with 0.2% betaine and 0.62% glycine resulted ina significant decrease in serum alanine aminotransferase concentrations. Nevertheless, other serum measurements remained unaffected by dietary treatments. In conclusion, the current supplemental levels of betaine, glycine, and choline in the mixture used in this studymay provide little benefits on productive performance, egg quality, immune responses, and serum measurements in aged laying hensraised under heat stress conditions.
