Abstract
In 2023, symptoms of southern blight occurred on the ground stems of small red beans cultivated at Haman area in South Korea. Symptoms of the disease appear as water-soaking to the lower part of the stem near the ground of the small red bean, which thenbecomes soft and rotted, gradually withers, and the entire plant blight and dies. White mold grew on the lesions on the stems in thesoil line, and many small, brown, round sclerotia were formed. The fungus produced smooth, white, silky hyphae on potato dextroseagar and formed numerous small, brown, round sclerotia. The size of the sclerotia was 1-3 mm, and the width of the hyphae was 4-9µm. Additionally, clamp connections were observed in the hyphae. After artificial inoculation, the same symptoms appeared as thoseoriginally discovered in the field, and re-isolation was conducted according to Koch's postulates. To clearly identify the causative fungus, the ITS rRNA region sequence, phylogenetic relationships, and Athelia rolfsii-specific PCR analysis were performed. The fungus causingsouthern blight in small red beans was identified as Athelia rolfsii. This is the first report of southern blight on small red beans inKorea. In addition, the occurrence of southern blight could pose a significant threat to domestic small red bean production, and this study is expected to be used as fundamental information to establish strategies for controlling southern blight on small red beans inthe future.
