Abstract
This study investigated the effects of fermented garlic by Leuconostoc citreum on laying performance, egg quality, and bloodcharacteristics in laying hens. One hundred eighty 33-week-old laying hens (Hy-line brown) were divided into four groups of randomized9 birds, each replicated times five. The treatments involved a basal diet (C, control) and diets containing fermented garlic (FG) 0.1%,FG 0.3%, and FG 0.5%. Through the 5-week feeding trial, the egg production was significantly increased in control, FG 0.3, and FG0.5 compared to FG 0.1 (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in feed intake and feed conversion ratio. Haugh unit in the FG0.1 treated group was significantly improved in comparison with control and FG 0.5 (P<0.05). Blood glucose was significantly decreasedin FG treatments compared to the control (P<0.01). The alkaline phosphatase (ALP), the blood biochemical parameters of liver damage, was significantly decreased in FG 0.3 compared to control (P<0.05). Consequently, the dietary supplementation of fermented garlic improvedHaugh units and reduced blood glucose and ALP concentrations. These results suggest that fermented garlic could be used as a feedadditive for laying hens.
