Abstract

This article studies on the so-called “Narcoliterature,” which reflects onthe issue of drugtraffickers and their violence associated with Mexico’s postnationaland global context during the last two decades. However, this genre hasbeen accused of excusing illegal and immoral activities by taking advantage ofpeople’s curiosity and eventually fetishizing violence and murder. Other critics,on the other hand, began to appreciate this genre since it demonstrates not onlythe failure of national project and the explosion of informal sector as a result ofneoliberal globalization, but that it also invites us to critically understand thecurrent political and economical situation of Latin America. This study, thus, aimsat exploring its possibilities as well as limits by highlighting historical evolution ofthe drug industry and by examining esthetical elements of Narconovels. Inparticular, Élmer Mendoza, known as the “father of Narcoliterature,” has showedthe regional “costumbres” of Sinaloa and US-Mexico borderlands in the differentforms of literary genres such as testimony, reports, Bildungsroman, and detectivenovel. First, Mendoza focused on recovering the “voiceless” voices of smalltraffickers, stigmatized and accused by the government and official media bydescribing them as victims of transnational politics of “prohibition.” However, asthe drug business became more industrialized and institutionalized causing aendless circle of violence and vengeance, he tents to distance himself form hisearlier opinion and to focus more on unveiling the structure of corruption andimpunity of the Post-national Mexican society. In doing so, Mendoza brings usto cast a critical reflection on the impacts of neoliberal economy and theexplosion of informal sectors.
