Abstract

Lope de Vega adapts Greek and Roman myths in his commedia Amor in Love and uses a strategy of crossing cultures to the era of King Felipe IV in the 17th century in Spain. The playwright borrows the myths of the murder of Python, Apollo and Daphne, and Cupid and Psyche from ancient myths and rewrites them creatively so that audiences in the Spanish Baroque period can sympathize with them. The author transformed the conflict between the gods shown in the myth, the original text, into the Catholic culture of Spain during the Counter-Reformation in the 17th century. The writer reinterpreted the original text in such a way that those who commit the sins of arrogance, envy, obscenity, and blasphemy receive a corresponding price, and give a happy ending to the main characters who defend the value of marriage and fidelity. In particular, he criticized the lax ethical consciousness of Spanish society at the time, contrasting lewdness and fidelity, adultery and marriage, which Venus and Diana represent. Lope de Vega adapted the pagan world of ancient Greek and Roman mythology into a Catholic reality acceptable to the 17th-century Spanish community.
