Abstract

This paper tries to analyze the worldview of Mesoamerican indigenous people, focusing on the perception of ecúmeno and humans as creatures and Nature. Mesoamerican indigenous people believed that the universe was basically divided into three layers, and that two opposing forces were operating in a mutually complementary manner. Based on this duality, the worldview of Mesoamerican indigenous people had the following characteristics. First, for Mesoamerican indigenous people, this world, or ecúmeno, was a huge community created and ruled by gods. Gods existed everywhere in Ecumeno and gave all beings divinity and vitality. Therefore, humans and Nature had a close relationship with each other as divinities within the community called ecúmeno. Second, the belief in the close relationship between humans and Nature through divinity led to nahualismo, which states that humans can transform into animals or natural phenomena. By connecting humans with specific natural objects through nahual, humans and Nature shared divinity. Therefore, for humans to become nahual meant to become one with Nature and communicate with it. In doing so, humans and Nature coexisted. Finally, the Mesoamerican indigenous people believed that everything in this universe and the world was connected. The link was the gods. The gods connected and communicated with all beings in this universe by moving from the inner anecúmeno to the underworld through the four pillars erected on all four sides of ecúmeno and the axis of the world in the middle. Therefore, for the Mesoamerican indigenous people, gods, humans, and Nature were all beings who had no choice but to depend on and help each other in this link. In this light, regardless of whether or not we believe in the existence of gods, what we must think about through the worldview of the Mesoamerican indigenous people is that humans and Nature are closely connected as one community of destiny, regardless of the link, and that humans and Nature are no longer objects to be developed, exploited, and conquered, but objects to be protected and coexisted with. Based on this change in perception, we must seek specific methods for coexistence with Nature.
