유년의 트라우마와 반복강박 -아나 마리아 마투테의 『첫 번째 기억』을 중심으로

아나 마리아 마투테(Ana María Matute)는 스페인의 ‘50년대 세대(la generación de medio siglo)’를 대표하는 일원이다. ‘50년대 세대’는 비록 유년기에 내전을 경험하지만 전쟁에 대한 기억은 정체성 형성 과정에서 결정적인 상흔으로 각인된다. 마투테 작품에 나타나는 유년의 트라우마는 다양한 관점에서 연구되어왔다. 유년의 트라우마는 기억의 층위에 통합되진 않지만 잠복기를 거친 후 강박적으로 사후에 출현한다. 역사적 트라우마도 개인 트라우마와 유사하게 방어기제의 작동으로 잊혀진 후, 잠재기를 거쳐 반복강박의 형태로 발현된다. 본고에서는 마투테의 소설 『첫 번째 기억』을 중심으로 유년의 트라우마 양상을 반복강박으로 발현되는 역사적 트라우마와 연계해서 살펴보고자 한다. 프랑코 부르주아 가정의 억압과 속박에서 방어기제로 사용되는 외상성 애착, 이중 사고에 의한 현실회피 과정을 분석할 것이다. 이후 마요르카 섬의 추에타에 대한 반유대주의 역사, 카인과 아벨 신화를 통한 인류 역사의 트라우마가 개인의 트라우마와 상호 공명하는 양상을 논의할 것이다. 이를 통해 살아남은 자의 윤리적 책무로서 어머니 부재의 근원적 트라우마에 기반한 트라우마 각성이 지닌 함의를 밝히고자 한다.
Abstract
Ana María Matute is a representative member of the ‘50s generation’, also known as the ‘Children of war’. Although the ‘50s generation’ experienced the civil war in their childhood, the memory of the war remains an indelible scar in their identity formation. Childhood trauma in Matute’s novels has been studied in various ways. Traumatic impressions made in early childhood are not consciously integrated into the layers of memory, but after a period of incubation, they emerge obsessively afterwards. Whether it is a long historical trauma of a group or an individual trauma, it is often forgotten by a defense mechanism and then manifests itself in the form of repetitive compulsions after a long latent period. In this study, we investigate the traumatic aspects of childhood in relation to the historical trauma that manifests itself in the form of repetitive compulsions in Matute’s novel First Memory. We analyze the processes of traumatic attachment, doublethink, and reality avoidance used as defense mechanism in the context of oppression and bondage of a Franco bourgeois family. We discuss the history of anti-Semitism against the Chueta on the island of Majorca, and how the trauma of human history resonates with personal trauma through the myth of Cain and Abel. It is explored the implications of trauma awakening based on the underlying trauma of maternal absence as an ethical responsibility of the survivor.
