초록
Classroom questioning, the skill of the elicitation method of teaching that is student-oriented and advocated today, gives an incentive to communicative activities in teaching English. Therefore, the aim of the study was to analyze the use of display and referential questions in classroom discourse in middle school English classrooms and to study the quantity of the learner talk which occurred with these questions. The present study investigates the types of questions asked by four English teachers teaching in four different middle schools. The data were transcribed and analyzed to see what questioning types each teacher employed and to obtain the number and percentage distribution of questioning types each teacher used. In addition, the mean lengths (in words) of students’ responses to display and referential questions were calculated to find out the differences of students’ responses in terms of length between display and referential questions. The findings indicated that display questions were used by teachers more frequently than referential questions. Also, it was found that referential questions could not create enough interaction. The implications of this study are that teachers should be provided with more training in developing their questioning techniques. Also, it would be helpful for teachers to use as many referential questions as possible in order to enhance learners’ engagement in communicative language use.
