Abstract
The purpose of the study is to develop a group counseling program for interpersonal ability enhancement for the gifted in the middle school and to verify its effectiveness. Because the vulnerability of interpersonal ability is the major source of interpersonal problems for the gifted, the group counseling program which gives an opportunity for the gifted to learn basic interpersonal skills was developed. The program consists of nine 45-minute sessions which are three modules of self-presenting, listening, and conflict solving. Each module has three sessions and respectively deals with core skills. Since each module was developed independently, either each module or each session can be implemented separately. In this study, three sessions, which is each session from three modules, were delivered to 40 students of the gifted classes in the middle schools by teachers. Before and after implementing the program, interpersonal ability were evaluated by means of students’ self-reports and teachers’ ratings. The results showed that the program was effective in communication skill of the gifted students measured by students’ self-report, and also effective in all 3 variables, rated by teachers, which are communication skill, interpersonal skill, and group activity skill. Especially the program was effective for the gifted students with lower interpersonal ability. Plan for program revision was suggested on the basis of student’s evaluation on satisfaction with the program and teacher’s evaluation on the program. Necessity for the following research on social and emotional development program for the gifted was also suggested.
