I (Korean Education & Employment Panel: KEEP I)

Abstract

The aim of this study is to longitudinally investigate whether there is a difference between vocational and general high school students in the subject interest during high school compared to middle school. The Korean Education & Employment Panel (KEEP I) data was analyzed using Hierarchical Linear Modeling. The results showed that (1) vocational high school students have significantly lower levels of interests in all subjects than general high school students, except for arts and physical education when they are in their third year of middle school. In particular, math and English interests of vocational high school students were largely lower than thoe of general high school students. (2) math and sicence interests of general high school decreased largest compared to other subjects. (3) unlike general high school students, vocational high school students' math interest has increased compared to middle school. (4) the increase in English interest of vocational high school students was greater than that of general high school students. (5) the decrease in science interest of vocational high school students was less than that of general high school students. Based on these findings, educational implications were discussed.
