Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the systematic synthetic phonics program developed at a private nursery. We analyzed the impact of the phonics program on 5-year-olds’ phonological and phonemic awareness, phoneme pronunciation, awareness, naming, and reading of the English alphabet, word awareness and reading, articulation, and affective characteristics. The results confirmed the positive effectiveness of the phonics program that had been developed over the past four years. First, it was found that the phonics program had a positive impact on the awareness and pronunciation of phonemes of children. It was also confirmed that it had a positive impact on word awareness and reading, as well as alphabet awareness and reading. There was a significant improvement in the children’s articulation ability. Regarding the affective domain, it was discovered that numerous children already exhibited a high level of interest and satisfaction in the phonics program. Observing the children’s active participation in the phonics program confirmed that the songs, chants, and media presented in the program provided children with positive motivation. To maximize the efficacy of this phonics program, the following recommendations are provided. The first step is to introduce a task that encourages children to produce words by blending phonemes or letters. Second, children must be exposed to authentic English pronunciation through media in order to reduce the influence of their native language. Thirdly, the phonics program should be modified to encourage more active participation from children.
