Abstract

In Yeoseodo shell mound on the Neolithic Age, it is excavated to many stone tools which have the feature of Korean traditional pebble tools in the Paleolithic Age. The reason why these tools attract public attention comes from their archaic features. Pebble tools shows a lot of cores for flaking as well as heavy weight tools like chopping tool, chopper, hand-axe etc. and flake tools like scraper, denticulate, borer etc. Even though the excavated range of this site is not wide, the construction of tools is fully enough to be understood to their making processes systematically. The reason there is little small tools comes from the possibility to use flake as stone tools and the fact that the small tools were replaced by many excavated tools of bone and antler. Yeoseodo shell mound site is applicable to the former term of the Neolithic Age, and the pebble tools of the site have a lot of similarity with the tradition of the pebble tools which had been continued until the late Paleolithic Age in the technical and shapely aspect. In addition, the study examines the continuing possibility by the developing process of major stone-tools culture to be appeared in the transition stage between Pleistocene and Holocene of Northeast Asia and North America. In Siberia and the Far Eastern area, there was the Paleolithic Age of Holocene, but the area had continued the existed micro-blade culture in the latest term of the late Paleolithic Age. In case of North American area, pebble tools were widely expanded to all over the west coast and major rivers, but they appeared at the same time as micro-blade culture and stone-spear culture were diversely extended. The cultures was also transmitted to the stone culture of the late Paleolithic Age like spear point among major stone tools. In case of Korea, as we can see in Gosan-li site among the sites of those period, the stone tool complex was formed on the continuous line of tools manufacture tradition in the last Paleolithic Age. For the meantime, researchers on the Neolithic Age have passed over chipped stone tools, and according to excavating the tools, various kinds of tools recently was widely found in the early period sites of the Neolithic Age. On this background, the pebble tools of Yeoseodo shell mound could be considered that the Neolithic Age's people made and use the pebble tools by utilizing abundant peripheral stones under the mechanism of making technique for chipped stone tools, not that they were on the continuous line of pebble tools tradition in the Paleolithic Age. Especially, the study presumes that these pebble tools were used to carry out works to deal with woods in islands which the income and outgo of stones was limited, and were also excavated in the definite space related with the works.
