개야도 ‘도서문화’의 전통과 활용전략 -새만금의 안섬·바깥섬 설정을 중심으로-

Abstract

This thesis is written to help have a better understanding of the “insular culture and tradition” preserved by the communities in and around Saemangeum including the life of islanders of Gaeyado, which has long been regarded as a remote place despite its geographical proximity to the lower reaches of the Geumgang River. The subject of the thesis came from the criticism against the traditional view that only the Gogunsan Islandsare directly related with Seamangeum. One may find in this thesis that I didn't pay due attention to the ecological features of Saemangeum, but the truth is thatI didn’t want to deal with it here largely because I believed that the topic needs a separate discussion. The main topic of this thesis is the culture and tradition preserved in the island communities in and around the bay of Saemangeum, and I will try to discuss it in relation with the characteristic features of local culture including the worship of village tutelaries and fishing in the intertidal region. For the convenience of discussion, I divided the area into several parts: the Outer Maritime Route Zone (or Upper Outer Islands) which contains the islands of Eocheongdo and Oeyeongdo; the Coastal Fishery Zone (or Upper Inner Islands) containing the islands of Yeondo and Gaeyando; the Inner Islands of Sinsido and Gogunsando; Lower Inner Islands of Biandoand Durido; and Lower Outer Islands of Wido, Sikdo and Wangdeungdo. I concluded that the islands above form the Insular Zone of Saemangeum. Meanwhile, I didn’t focus on the worship of village tutelaries and the fishing in the intertidal region because they are not unique to the local culture of Seamangeum and may be better understood when discussed with other topics such as waterways and fish migration. Finally, I tried to find measures to exploit the insular culture and tradition of Saemangeum to boost tourism and the economic vitality of the area.
